Singapore--Winter 2006

Jeremy and Sherri made it to Singapore for the Annual Asian Bible Lectureship (AABL) and a Gospel Meeting at the Lim Ah Pin Church of Christ (check out their website). I will post updates and pictures on this page temporarily during our stay here.  I hope you all find it encouraging.

Sat. Dec. 2, 2006

Sherri and I are waiting to watch a laser light show at a fountain in Sentosa--a small island south of Singapore.  It is the end of the day and both of us are hot and sweaty.  We are having the best time together.

I wanted you guys to see what type of Christmas we were having.  The temperature never gets below 70 and remains around 85 most of the time. In this picture we are watching hump backed pink dolphins perform, and yes, we are enjoying the sun and sand.

I am not sure what this is behind us, but it is cool. We are Clark Quay and riverside dining area.  I think it is the place to be at night; it is pretty vacant during the morning hours.  Behind us is the Singapore river, which disects the island and makes for romantic boat rides.

Singapore is a "fine" city.  This pic was taken on the MRT--subway system.  These fines are for real and nobody violates the rules.  It is nice to be in a country where smoking is banned from all public places and the city is free from litter.  Chewing gum is not even sold in the stores.

We are taking a cable car ride over a bay to Sentosa--a barrier island off Singapore.  Sherri just could not resist my handsome figure.

Our staple food here is or course "French."  We eat french fries and french toast almost every day.  Most of our fast food resturants are here--McDonalds, Burger King, Long John Sliver, KFC, Subway, Starbucks, Hardees, HOOTERS, and many more.

We took a trip to Singapore's "Night Safari."  It is like a zoo without any cages.  Animals come right up to the tram on the ride through; there is nothing separating you from the Lions.  It is really cool. I am not sure why the lions do not eat us.

This is the famous Merlion at Sentosa park.  I am not sure of its story but it has mythological meaning to the people here.  It is pretty cool to see, and at night lasers shoot out of it's eyes.

I know what you guys are thinking--no work and all play.  That would be true of the first few day here, but we begin preaching, teaching, and encouraging the brethren this morning (Sun-Dec 3, 2006).  Sherri and I both teach bible class this morning and the lectureship begins tomorrow.

Americans here:  Dorsey Traw--missionary from Thailand; Lason Mayo and his wife--missionary from Austrailia; Billy Bland--MSOP; Tim Wilkes and his wife--Fishers of Men; Andy Cates--Tuscaloosa, AL; Tim Burroughs--Luxahoma, MS; Claude Gardner--Henderson, TN; Perry Cotham (95 yrs old)--Dallas, TX; Benny Hale--Cherokee, AL.

Dec 8, 2006 - More pics for you guys to enjoy

Sherri is talking to Dorsey Traw (missionary in Thailand for 45 years) and Claude Gardner (President Emeritus for Freed Hardeman University).  We are at the Jurong Church of Christ for Perry Cotham's gospel meeting.

Sherri is preparing for her lesson, which she taught the women Sunday morning.

Sherri teaches the women's class at the Lim Ah Pin Road congregation.  The Ladies said she did an excellent job.  I was teaching the men's class at the same time; we were only separated by a sheet that divided the room.

Perry Cotham celebrated his 95th birthday while we were in Singapore.  Everyone over here admires Perry for his age and willingness to continue preaching the Word. He is going with Dorsey Traw to Thailand after Singapore for a week long campaign.

We spent several days in Chinatown.  This is where we did most of our shopping.

This is a picture of dragon fruit.  The inside looks and tastes like a kiwi.  There are several wierd fruits over here, but none more so than the Durian.

This is the durian fruit--they are banned from the subway.  They say that the durian tastes very sweet and delicious but stinks something aweful.  Someone described it as eating ice cream in the sewer.  I did not try it, but most consider it a delicacy.

Can you find Sherri in this picture.  This was taken in Chinatown at one of the shops on the street.  I am not sure if these manequins are the norm, but they sure gave us a laugh.

We have eaten lots of different food (Sherri even ate a baby squid today), walked several miles, taught many Christians, answered countless questions, asked even more questions, fellowshiped with some of the church's best brethren, and enjoyed ourselves immensely.

We are in the middle of our gospel meeting and doing well.  We had approximately 75 people last night with several non-Christians visiting.  My first sermon was on the Value of the Soul and tonight I preach on The Judgment Day.

The members of Lim Ah Pin have knocked doors for three Saturdays and passed out fliers.  They also put an advertisement in the local newspaper.  I will have to bring you the paper with my picture in it.

That's all for now.  Keep us in your prayers.
